Introduction
The Project Management Institute (PMI) announced recently that the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam will be changing to a new format effectively June 30th, 2020. Therefore, as from July 1st, 2020, the new exam will take effect. This is a clarion call for those candidates that have been planning and set the goal to schedule and pass PMP exam before June 2020.
The initial date for the exam transition was December 15th, 2019. And the new exam will be effective the next day. But after the announcement in June of 2019, there were several feedbacks from the stakeholders to the PMI and as a result of these responses, it was decided that at least six months should be allowed for those currently preparing for the certification, apply for the current exam module.
You might be wondering, what are they changing in this exam? Well, the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), currently in its sixth edition (released September 6, 2017) will remain the de facto standard for the PMP exam, but the format will be changing from the 5 Domains popularly known as I-P-E-MC-C (Initiation-Planning-Monitoring & Controlling and Closing) format to 3. The new domain format will be; P-P-BE; (People, Process and Business Environment)
The New PMP Exam in July 2020
The People Domain will carry 42% of the overall exam objectives, the Process Domain will be 50% while the Business Environment will be 8%. There will be a mixture of waterfall, agile and hybrid questions and applications in this brand-new exam effectively July 1st, 2020.
To most observers in the certification industry, it is a matter of when and not why. This is because PMI conduct an intensive survey among industry experts around the globe regarding the project management as a field of study and keep learning about what is evolving and its impact on the performance of the existing standards and they are ready to adapt and stay ahead of these dynamic changes.
For those that are new to the certification, it is important to know that PMP exam changes every 3-5 years based on the outcome of surveys conducted globally among project management subject matter experts (SME’s). This change is usually a response to changes in the field of project management across the globe. There is usually advance notice in the media and on PMI website.
It is very important to check the PMI website regularly if you are aspiring to become certified in any of these PMI certifications so that you can receive the latest and up to date information on new developments. With regards to the new changes coming in 2020, PMI has posted the new exam objectives and the cross over on their website.
You Can Still Pass Your PMP Exam Before June 2020
According to PMI; “The PMP Exam Content Crossover Map will help you identify areas of content to update your PMP Exam Prep Course, so it is aligned to the 2020 Exam Content Outline (ECO). This document is only a guideline to identify what possible content from your old course you may want to repurpose.”
