Instead of complaining and becoming glooming about it, there are four important areas of life that we can give a careful consideration and get to work as soon as possible, because no one knows for sure, how long this lock down will last. The earlier we have a working plan, the better, so that the plan can work for you. I would like to share just 4 areas: health, family, goals and plans.
Health
The well-being of our family and loved ones comes first. We are all familiar with the adage “Health is wealth” this is the time we experience the reality of this axiom. We all treasure our health and will do everything practical to keep it safe, sound and healthy.
As we shelter in, we pay attention to the old hygiene practice; wash your hand, do not touch your face and practice social distancing. At this point, with World Health Organization (WHO) COVID-19 data, we work to abide by the “prevention is better cure” attitude. We keep these health professional and governmental authority guidelines as shield to sustain and maintain our well-being. This risk avoidance strategy should be no brainer.
There is a lot of advantages to abiding by these guidelines; we save time and money as we do with our projects. Time for productive activities and not for quarantining, money for basic necessities and not for experimenting with medicine that looks promising but might not work. We also add value as we improve our professional skills by contributing good results as we climb the professional ladder, helping our families and organizations grow to new heights.
If we strive to remain healthy, we keep ourselves in good shape for other economic activities and benefits. Please remember the gap between being healthy and sickness is just a breath away. It is very important that you listen, obey and apply these guidelines, no matter how strict they may appear to the many; as a project leader, risk avoidance and mitigation are better options than risk acceptance, when it is a matter of life and death.
Family
As we care for the project resources and stakeholders on our projects, we should also give similar attention to our family members, loved ones and neighbors. This is one way we can adapt and professionalize humanity within the project management framework, I mean in your everyday living.
To our immediate family members, we want to educate them regarding the safety guidelines. We must inculcate the guidelines by starting with the basics; hand washing, sanitizing, cleaning and wiping surfaces to disposing trash as soon as they accumulate. We can also take a step further, since we will not be doing a lot of food take outs again, can we experiment with cooking nutritious meals at home again. As a project management expert, turn these cooking initiatives into a family project. Define the scope of healthy and nutritious food, shop for nice fruits, perform cost estimation and independent estimates and compare these results with eating out. Apply stakeholder management and look at the benefits of cooking at home and long-term savings to the family.
For most schools in the area, the kids are out for the rest of the year. You will need to draw a project schedule for their daily activities. This should encompass what they do at school and will like to enjoy at home. Visiting school websites, talking to their teachers and buying supporting textbook to help them in their academic is very important. You want to keep the minds of these kids sharp as much as possible. You can begin experimenting with home schooling. Analyze their individual situations as you would your stakeholder management. Please take into consideration quality management as you plan their meal, academic and entertainment. Remember “all work and no play make every kid a dull kid.” [Italics mine]. Remember, with this pandemic, 2020 summer be a lukewarm winter!
Love of the community will not be overemphasized. Please take inventory of people around you that need to be contacted; and check on their well-being. Remember, as a project manager, you communicate 90% of the time. So now, put your communication hat on, practice it with love, kindness, empathy and sense of community for your friends, co-workers, neighbors, relatives, old school mates, member of your religious organization and see how you can volunteer your time as well, Sending cards and letter writing will be appropriate in these instances.
You should be creative as you explore these various options, because there is a lot of happiness in giving than receiving. Please start today.
Goals
We always plan for the successful end in view, this includes things we have in the order of priority, our health, family, career and future plans. We can spend quality time to revise individual goals around these items. When we perform risk analysis, we look at SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities & Threat) Analysis; we can use this as the framework to refine our goals. You can also adopt the fishbone diagram to define cause and effect so that you can filter the best worthwhile goals that will benefit your health, family, goals and the future plans. These are recommended tools because it will keep you focused on the important subject at hand. It also stimulates your creativity for better results.
I want to assume that you and your family health conditions are in good shape because of the various strategies you have adopted as this pandemic grapples the human society. We mentioned “Prevention is better than cure” mantra; you might want to explore how this will become your family principle or code of conduct everyone in your household live by, so that you can save on unnecessary hospital bills, needless prescriptions and visit to Emergency Rooms (ER). This is called ground rule in project management. You can brand it as a “FGR” – Family Ground Rules”
That settled, we need to focus on career, you already know that “no condition is permanent” as with technology, it continues to experience growth virtually every six to nine months or less within the past two decades. Here are the thought provoking questions; how do I reposition my career for the next five years? As technology undergo rebirth, so is the current workplace in the face of globalization. You might want to keep exploring what will interest you career-wise in years to come?
Try and remember these revolutions; the birth of Internet gave rise to globalization. The incubation of email technology success gave rise to the cloud technology. Corporate organizations have been investing massively in artificial Intelligence that includes machine learning and deep learning. So where do you fit in the frame of reference as this wind of change gather momentum and sweep through the labor landscape. Just like mailman and secretary career was erased by the arrival of email system, what current opportunity will be wiped by artificial intelligence? You will want to spend some quality time during this period to have productive goals lined up backed by definite action. A careful research of new career fields should attract your curiosity. Remember, there is no excuse for not taking action, this is a blessing in disguise. You call this a positive risk or what? Then act as appropriate to your situation.
Remember, there is no traffic, Dentist appointment or school run that will distract you. You must define these goals as soon as you are done reading this blog, if you do not already have one to update.
Future Plans
I know from experience that no projects are alike. There is no doubt that we agree on this fact. Yet, we enjoy the challenges each project brings each time we are assigned one or when we successfully complete them. The same principle applies to this pandemic. It will come and go.
We have seen them all, SARS, Bird flu, H1N1 and Ebola. They shook the world when they came, we mourn, we cried, yet dust ourselves up and we moved on because we survived, by virtue of our leadership training we become resilient. This current COVID-19 will wreak its havoc, as currently being experienced and it will soon pass, until another time. Since we know the cycle, we want to remain optimistic just as we have been for each assigned project in the past two decades.
You need to have solid future plans for the key areas we been talking about. You cannot postpone them again. Remember, you have the time for it. Base your assumption on the fact that the future will be tough, but you will be successful. That is a simple definition of optimism. Plan for the best, work for the best by addressing risk and defining ways to deal with difficulties; this what we described as “prepare for the worst” because most times, they may not happened, but for the fact that you have a Plan B or Plan C in place makes your future a solid future plan.
Please make the best use of this pandemic house arrest called “stay at home” for the best of your future and for your family. As you can see, once again, project management to the rescue.

]]>With the event of this past week (March 16-20, 2020) alone, it is remarkable in in the US history as more than 3.28 million filed for unemployment insurance. Experts are now forecasting that three times this number accrue by end of March 2020; we are talking roughly between 9-10 million labor force strong. The massive layoff is caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and many will now be forced to explore alternative means of making end meet.
The challenges are high; loss of health insurance, inability to pay bills and support self and family. All other plans that involves use of capital is now grounded to a halt. Since healthcare experts are projecting that the virus will dictates its own timeline, that makes it even more difficult to predict when things will turnaround for the better.
Recalling the experience of how things turned out in 2008, not all the job returned. Not all the business came back, and at the same time, there were still many good things that happened. But as we are all witnessing history, it always carries two surprising gift bags; one is ominous and the other is profitable. The ominous signs are the economic hardships many people are currently experiencing. We’ll talk about the profitable at length.
The Real Benefits of this Pandemic
Just as the recession of the 2008 bites harder, the Federal Government bent backwards to do all within its power to jolt the economy back to life, through stimulus bill that gave life to the auto industry, mortgage banks and the financial system. As the growth accrues, new jobs and careers emerges; gig economy took a life of its own. Ecommerce soared to greater heights, Uber, iPhone, iPads, online education, automobile with USB and Wi-Fi. Just because we all blended into these advancements of the 21st century, we seem not to have noticed; how much our lives have changed.
A similar trend is brewing as this pandemic reach its crescendo and bows out. Let’s keep examining them one after the other.
New opportunities
Let me start with the new advanced technologies, iPhones started growing in numeric numbers. Experts began to forecast that blackberry’s last days are here. It was not long after that Samsung strengthened its competition and the smartphone war began with the Apple iPhone. Whoever wins this battle, one thing is clear, technology has opened several doors opportunities to mankind on a scale unimaginable.
This leads me to increased wages. Just because employers of labor have learned a lesson from the recession, productivity took on a new meaning and as such they are now ready to attract the best talents to meet the growing competition that is driven based on innovativeness. As such, workers compensation received between 40-65% increase, depending on where you find yourself on the cadre.
As new opportunities arrive from all directions, the business approaches was revisited, employers of labor decided to retool and embrace forward looking methodologies from the psychology of office seat arrangement to project management methodology, everything was tinkered with, to validate that after the 2008 recession, we are now in a new era.
World over, everyone perceives Governmental authorities as archaic and not much of any relevance. Yet around the globe all the progressive Government rose to the occasion. They give more recognition to the consumers, the larger section that makes up the middle class. They realize they need legal protection in a capitalistic economy. They enacted laws that shows that Government actually listened when the whole pains was all gone. The experience of the depression becomes a lesson they never wanted to unlearn.
As the Governments cleans its house, innovative ideas explode to the point where we see the emergence of more millionaire that we can ever imagine in a generation or not even a century. This wealth is not generated by working without sleeping, but very smartly as these individuals leverage the platform that the iPhone and Android technologies (one of the many examples). The recovery of the 2008 recession now embolden a lot of many people to become risk takers. In the long run, the risk paid off; uber and Lyft are a good reference. As of today, there are tens of thousands across the globe that earn their income from smartphone app development alone. Before the recession, this would have been described as a pipe dream.
As all these events unfolds real time, there are a number of professionals that could not wrap their minds around these facts; that life before the recession can be compared to Dark Ages when we stark the volume of accomplishments in the years after the recession. There is a lesson here for you and me, if you are discouraged. The innovation that gained momentum after the recession did not come by accident, it was engineered and orchestrated by humans that looks like you and me. If they can lead, we should be able to follow at a good pace. We should be able to catch up the pace and strive to surpass these fellow humans. In the end, it becomes a win-win outcome for everyone, as we navigate the dangerous map called future!
Personal Lessons
While out of job, don’t become discouraged, see it as a time to prepare for the job of the future.
For those that refuse to advance their career by learning a skill for the future, they risk remaining a clog in the wheel for the fast-moving train. But if you advance yourself by learning a trade and/or a professional skill, you are strategically positioning yourself for something profitable. Remember in a capitalistic economy, there is no stagnation.
In 2008, professional certification opened many doors of opportunity for many workers that were laid off. I was able to secure IT and Project Management teaching opportunities in at least 4 Training Institutions at the time; teaching and preparing these candidates for CompTIA: A+, Network, Security+, Project+, Microsoft Certified Systems administrator (MCSA), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications. Virtually all my students are gainfully employed today, I know this because I keep track of them on LinkedIn.
Before coming to the class, many of these students were struggling to find their feet, because as they explained in class “no specialized skills to claim”. But the 2008 recession jolted them to life, and they were not discouraged but much more encouraged as they see their new skills opening new frontiers each day. In their little ways, they embrace the risk, bite the bullet and sacrificed at least three to six months to retool for the future, now the burning of that midnight candle paid off. I need to also remind you that before the recession, these students were earning much less, but after their certification training and testing, many of them secure various new opportunities within 3-6 months afterwards. Today, they are on a defined career path because of the professionally acquired skills and excelling in their little ways. Now they can look back and heave a sigh of relief, “it was a time well spent”
This pandemic will soon disappear as medical experts works at creating strong therapeutics to combat it. When it is all over, you want to be ready for the show time. The time to start is now.
I have more useful information on cloud technology, cyber security and project management. I have useful and reliable information on artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning as well. Adaptability and willingness to learn are the roadmap for future opportunities.
Examine where your interest lies and start working at it. Determination and courage will also be required on your part. This is the time to hold a conference call with yourself and prepare for that journey to the future. It is not far, it will be dire, if you delay!
The Silver Lining in this Pandemic
It is both ways; just as employer heave a sigh of relief for shedding those labors, it gives them time to rethink and retool for another future competition. So are you, if you find yourself at the end of the tunnel, see it as a blessing in disguise, now you have the time to meet the demand of the future labor force that is productive!
Please remember, it will be tough and rough, but you will survive it. Look back, several tough life experiences you have weathered in the past. Here you are today, still waxing stronger. This is not the end of the world; it is just the end of a phase in your life history. We all go through it, to be refined. See this moment as one of refinement and time to get to work.
Conduct your personal research, ask good questions, talk to professionals in your prospective field, glean as much reliable information as possible, pray for guidance, explore all the options available to you. With courage and determination be optimistic, give it your all, you will be amazed at the successful results.
Another silver lining, I was thinking about, perhaps you have several great ideas that can give birth to Uber-like investments or position yourself to compete with Tim Cook. Your idea might be the one that Jeff Bezos is willing to compete for. No matter how small it may look, please don’t dismiss it, remember the frank word your teacher instill in you, before you left high school millions of years ago; ”always believe in yourself”, there is a light at the end of every tunnel as long as you are optimistic ready to take the journey. Remember, you have nothing else to lose, experiment taking the risk, because you have nothing to lose but a lot to gain. Long life lessons and abundant success awaits you.
Your job loss today will result in a huge again as you explore all the suggestions outlined in this blog. Please get a paper and pen and get to work now!

]]>From my experience, there are certain questions that a determined candidate will ask that will show their level of inclination on “Just curious”, “Still thinking” and “Determined & Ready”; I have eliminated the first two levels, I am considering the final level – “Determined & Ready”; because these are the candidates that may have even bought the PMBOK Guide, approached their employer for assistance or even promised in their annual performance that PMP is the next big thing they are pursuing this year.
There are ten questions, but I will quickly share five and answered them here to help you reach that decision point, so that you can start enjoying the benefits that earning a PMP certification brings…
What qualification/criteria do I need to meet to sit for this exam?
This is the question that holds many people back from attempting this certification, even though, they never ask….
It is true that Project Management Institute (PMI) recommends these requirements to be qualified for this exam.
OR
So, I take the equivalent education to mean, you have minimum of 3-5 year working experience, or with college education, yes, you can study and pass this certification exam.
I always encourage graduates, experienced professionals and those who have never attempted any certification test but have at least 5-10 years of working experience to give it a shot, because it always open doors of opportunities, as experiences have shown.
How can I pass this professional certification since I have never attempted a certification exam before now?
Good question…remember there is always a first time to everything, first time you drove a car, first time you taste a delicacy…and first time you received a paycheck, first time you received a promotion…..all these first time(s) bring its anxiety and pleasant memories….but you did not turn any of these opportunities down, now it has become part of your life experiences.
So I can assure you, there will be anxiety, but you will be learning from experts that wants you to succeed at all cost, all you need is the excitement that helped you taste that food for the first time, determination that helped you drove that car, for the first time and the joy of your first pay check…
You will have to study and understand the concepts and become familiar with these body of knowledge. They are not difficult, they are relatable. In your daily routine, you work with budget, resources, scope, procurement, contracts and quality, on this exam you will be taught how to apply tested standards to achieving excellent results.
Before now, you may have been doing it by trials and errors but after your certification test your perspective will be more refined, and everyone will see the difference. You will have tons of evidence to stand by your work.
With great excitement, strong determination and anticipated joy, you will definitely pass your PMP, so no need to be wary of anything.

The recession of 2008 is still fresh in our memory. Many unskilled labors were the first causality of the recession. Mostly those that survive it were certified professionals. For those certified professionals that were let go because of budget cuts, did not have to stay longer in the labor market.
The certification keeps the door of opportunity open because employers are looking to save on time and cost and add value. These are the values that a PMP certified brings to the table. You can stay prepared, if in case the economy is going to cool anytime….
Improve your organization value
You will realize one thing as you review many job advertisements lately. The demand for certification is on the increase. The simple reason is because, most organization want to remain relevant in 5, 10 years from now. One of the key ingredients that will make that possible are the skilled human resource.
That is why, you notice that HR is always busy interviewing round the year, whether there is an opening or not. This give them the right access to the pool of skilled resources anytime there is need to pivot the organization. The PMP certified are always on their mind because of the value they add.

]]>Most successful professionals are risk takers. A risk taker wins it all, because they are strategic, calculated and since they are determined they always come off successful, most of the time. I have tons of experience I can relate around these established facts. In fact, that is what inspires the title of this blog.
Why June 2020…?
It is true that Project Management Institute (PMI) is changing PMP exam on July 1st, 2020 to a new one. The news has been going around since August 2019. PMI first announced this in December 2019 and then after much consultation they decided to give all their Registered Education Provider (REP) time to gradually phase out this current exam study on the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide 6th edition (The PMBOK Guide 6th ed.).
So, if you are a prospective candidate looking to pass the PMP exam before June 31st, 2020; the first question will be; can I make this happen? Your clearer affirmative answer goes to the heart of this blog. If you say yes. You are determined and the next question you need to find answer to is; how do I do that? The accurate answer lies in a robust plan.
What is PMI Testing….?
This is a good question that leads to better planning. We need to know the exam objectives and what will be asked on the exam to better prepare. Besides, do we need to perform some “administrative rituals”, like registration? The answer is yes, we need to complete this on PMI website.
Now a plan is coming together. We need a textbook or textbooks, practice questions and perhaps attend a project management training to augment what was being studied. If self-studying will be part of the plan. We also need to establish and follow a firm study schedule in order to digest all these exam objectives.
You also need to know the number of the exam questions on the test and total hours you need to complete these to become a certified project management professional. As part of your strategic planning, I noticed that you are not a trial and error person. Since more than a million have passed this PMP certification, there should be a solution you can benchmark.
Above all, you might probe further; “where can I get all of these questions answered in one place? You might say to yourself; “I don’t have the time to start digging around the web” and more so, you have just 6 months to “make the magic happen”.
“This look impossible”, you might think to yourself.
Well since your determination has brought you this far, see the surprise package in the next section.
The wait and search are over…
All these probing just validated my established theory stated in the outset. You are not just smart, but very thoughtful in your professional career planning. Happily, enough, I have the package in one place that will help you from end to end, in achieving your PMP certification dream goal.
This is a FREE gift called PMP Study Plan
